AI Highlights of the Week

A judge sided with Meta in a lawsuit by authors like Sarah Silverman, ruling their claims lacked evidence of market harm, making Meta’s AI training “fair use.”

Still, the judge warned that using copyrighted work for AI could be unlawful in other cases and criticized Meta’s defense.

The ruling follows a similar win for Anthropic, which still faces trial for copyright violations.

Apple is in early internal talks about acquiring Perplexity AI, aiming to enhance its AI and search tech. Though no direct approach has been made, key Apple execs have discussed the deal.

A potential acquisition could see Perplexity’s AI search integrated into Safari, reducing Apple’s reliance on Google. This comes as Apple pushes deeper into generative AI with its “Apple Intelligence” initiative.

Perplexity, valued at $14B and backed by NVIDIA, is a rising player in AI search. Meta also previously showed interest in buying the company.

DeepMind has launched AlphaGenome, an AI model that predicts how DNA mutations impact gene regulation. It expands on earlier models, focusing on the non-coding genome.

AlphaGenome processes up to 1 million base-pairs, predicting molecular traits like gene start sites and RNA production using data from major genomic projects.

Available via API for research, it aims to advance understanding of genome function and disease.

Microsoft is replacing the Blue Screen of Death with a Black Screen of Death in Windows 11, aiming to improve crash clarity and system recovery.

The new design removes the blue color, QR code, and frowny face, but adds clearer error codes and driver info. It’s set to launch later this summer.

The update follows last year’s CrowdStrike outage. Microsoft is also introducing Quick Machine Recovery to restore unbootable systems faster.

YouTube is rolling out two AI updates to enhance search and learning on the platform.

A new AI-powered search carousel will highlight video clips and creator insights for topics like travel and shopping. It’s now available to U.S. Premium users.

YouTube is also expanding its conversational AI tool to some non-Premium users, offering recommendations and interactive learning for academic content.
