We’ll explore when to use Chat or Work, how local and cloud tasks differ, and how features such as Plugins, Browser, Computer Use, Skills, Scheduled Tasks, Sites, and Remote fit together.

What Is ChatGPT Work?

Most people use ChatGPT by asking a question and reading the answer. ChatGPT Work is for the moment when you want to hand over the job itself.

Imagine you are preparing for a client meeting. You could ask ChatGPT, “What should a client brief include?” That is a normal Chat request.

With Work, you could give it your meeting notes, recent emails, and last month’s report, then ask it to prepare the finished brief for you. Instead of only explaining what to do, it works through the material and returns something you can review.

That finished result might be a presentation, an updated spreadsheet, a research report, a project plan, or a dashboard. You can follow the task while it runs, answer questions, correct its direction, and approve important actions.

ChatGPT Chat vs ChatGPT Work

Chat and Work are not competing versions of ChatGPT. They are useful at different moments.

Chat is where you think with ChatGPT. Work is where you hand ChatGPT an assignment.

Suppose you are putting together a monthly marketing report.

In Chat, you might ask what a useful report should contain. It can help you choose the right metrics and shape the story.

In Work, you would provide the marketing data and ask for the report itself. Work can review the files, find the important changes, build the document, and return it for your approval.

Work With Local Project Files

A local project is a folder on your computer containing everything related to one piece of work: notes, drafts, spreadsheets, images, and reference files.

Select the folder in the desktop app, and ChatGPT Work can use those files together. This allows it to:

• Understand the full project

• Compare information across files

• Work from existing documents and templates

• Create or update files in the same folder

• Continue from where you left off

You spend less time uploading files, while Work gets the context it needs to be genuinely useful.

Local Work vs Cloud Work

Once you understand local projects, the next choice becomes much simpler: should the task run locally or in the cloud?

A local task runs through the ChatGPT desktop app on your computer. This is the right choice when Work needs a folder, file, or application stored on that machine.

A cloud task runs without depending on your computer. It can continue after you close the desktop app or turn the computer off, and you can return to it from the web or mobile app.

If you want Work to update a spreadsheet saved on your laptop, run the task locally. If you want it to research a topic online and prepare a report while you are away, the cloud is usually the better home.

This is not a choice between better and worse. It is simply a question of where the task needs to happen.

Plugins: Connect the Services You Already Use

Your work is rarely stored in one place. Emails sit in Gmail, meetings live in a calendar, notes may be in Notion or Granola, and projects might be tracked in Asana.

Plugins connect ChatGPT to these services, allowing Work to use them as part of an assignment.

Once connected, you can bring a plugin into a task using the @ symbol. Work can then collect the information it needs and, when supported, update the service for you.

This means less switching between apps and less copying and pasting all from one clear request.

Browser: Let ChatGPT Work Across Websites

In the desktop app, open the side panel and visit the website you need. Because the Browser sits inside ChatGPT, you can ask questions about the page or let Work browse it for you.

It can:

• Scroll through feeds and find popular posts

• Research websites that need real browser access

• Move through pages, menus, and search results

• Fill supported forms or prepare message replies

• Repeat the same research as a Scheduled Task

A one-time search may be quicker to do yourself. The real value appears when the same research needs to happen regularly—Work can handle it and have the findings waiting for you.

Computer Use: Work Inside Desktop Apps

Browser is for websites. Computer Use is for applications installed on your computer.

It lets ChatGPT click, type, and move through an approved app much like you would.

To use it:

• Open the ChatGPT desktop app

• Type @Computer

• Name the app you want it to use

• Describe the task and the finished result

• Review any permission requests before it continues

On Windows, keep the target app visible while Computer Use is working.

Try this prompt

@Computer Open Notepad and create a weekly content plan.

Add these headings:
- Newsletter
- LinkedIn Post
- Short Video

Under each heading, add two empty bullet points.

Save the file as “Weekly Content Plan.txt” on my Desktop. Do not change any other files.

ChatGPT should open Notepad, write the plan, and save the finished file in the location you requested.

Skills: Save a Workflow You Want to Repeat

If Work creates something you love—or you keep giving it the same instructions—turn that process into a Skill.

A Skill is a saved workflow. It remembers how you want a particular task completed, including its steps, structure, and style.

For example, if Work creates a presentation with the perfect layout, colours, and writing style, you can save it as Clean Blue Presentation.

To create a Skill:

• Finish and refine the result

• Ask Work to turn it into a Skill

• Review it and allow the Skill to be installed

To use that Skill again:

• Type / in the prompt box

• Find and select your saved Skill

• Add your new topic or source material

Work will follow the saved workflow and produce the same type of result using your new content.

You can also find useful community-made Skills on GitHub. Just review what a Skill does before installing it, and only use Skills from sources you trust.

Sites: Build and Host a Website Inside ChatGPT

ChatGPT Sites lets you turn an idea into a working website or lightweight app without writing the code yourself.

It can create:

• Landing pages

• Dashboards

• Project trackers

• Event pages

• Internal portals

• Simple interactive tools

To get started, type @Sites and describe what you want to build. Once the first version is ready, you can continue giving instructions to improve the design, rewrite sections, or add new features.

The most useful part is the built-in hosting. When the Site is ready, you can publish it directly through ChatGPT and receive a link that you can open on another device or share with others.

Use ChatGPT Work Remotely From Your Phone

You do not have to stay at your desk while Work is running.

Cloud tasks already follow you across devices. You can open the ChatGPT mobile app, check their progress, and continue the conversation from your phone.

Remote takes this a step further. It connects the mobile app to a Mac or Windows computer running ChatGPT. From your phone, you can open a local task, send another instruction, approve an action, and review the result.

The work still happens on the connected computer, which means it can continue using the local project or desktop tools you allowed. Your phone simply becomes the remote control. The computer needs to remain awake and online.

That brings the whole system together. Work can use your project files, connected services, websites, and desktop apps, and you can stay in control even after you leave the desk.
