Claude Is Coming for Your Video Editor
A step-by-step guide to Claude Motion and Claude Dashboards, with real examples
Hey smarties 👋
The average 60-second animated explainer costs $8,746, based on 110 studio quotes. On October 8, Anthropic built a way to make one right inside Claude. This week, we’re looking at Claude Motion, from your first prompt to a finished video, plus a quick look at its sibling, Claude Dashboards.

Claude Can Make Videos Now
Claude can now make the kind of animated video you’d normally hire a motion designer for.
Give it a report or a few screenshots, tell it who the video is for, and it builds a short explainer with your text and charts moving on screen. Until now, getting a video like this out of Claude meant working in Claude Code and connecting extra animation tools. Motion does it right in the Claude app and hands you an MP4.
What interests me is the editing. Most AI video tools give you a finished clip, and one wrong detail means generating the whole thing again. Motion builds the video as code, so you can fix a single number or slow down one scene while the rest stays exactly as it was.
So if you’ve never edited a video or designed anything, a launch video or an animated chart is now something you can make yourself.
02 / ACCESS
Finding Motion in Claude
Motion is still in beta, and for now it’s only on business plans:
Team: On by default. Plans start at $20 per seat a month, billed yearly, with a two-seat minimum.
Pro and Max: Not yet, but you do get Claude Dashboards, which launched with it.
Free: Neither is available.
Once it’s on, open Artifacts in the left sidebar. Under Make something new, each tile starts a different kind of project:
Docs: documents you can write and edit with Claude
Slides: presentation decks
Design: visual designs like mockups and graphics
Dashboard: live dashboards built from your data
Motion: animated videos built from your content
Click Motion to start a new video, or just ask for one in any chat.
Note: Motion counts toward your plan’s usage limits, and longer videos use more.
03 / MOTION IN ACTION
Make Your First Motion Video
Step 1: Start Simple
Click Motion in the Artifacts tab, attach a few screenshots and keep the prompt short. We gave it four screenshots of our website and this:
Turn these screenshots of smarterwithai.news into a 10-second vertical promo for our newsletter. Use our brand colors, #2F4FC4 and white. End with "Subscribe free at smarterwithai.news."Here’s what it made:
Step 2: Write a Better Brief
A short prompt leaves Claude to guess the rest. Anthropic’s advice is to tell it:
Who will watch the video
Where it will play
Roughly how long it should run
Then attach what you want on screen: your logo, screenshots or real numbers. Motion animates what you give it, and anything you leave out, it fills in on its own.
Fill this in:
Turn [your report / notes / screenshots] into a [15]-second video.
Who will watch it: [your audience].
Where it will play: [LinkedIn feed / meeting screen / website].
Main takeaway: [one sentence].
Scenes, in order: [1. … 2. … 3. …]
Use my [logo / fonts / brand colors], attached.
Keep it to a few words per scene.
Final screen: [your last line].Here’s the brief we wrote for our AI Library:
Turn the attached images into a 10-second promo video for the AI Library from Smarter with AI.
Who will watch it: newsletter readers who save AI ideas but rarely put them to work.
Where it will play: inside our newsletter and on LinkedIn, 16:9. It plays muted, so every point has to read as words on screen.
Main takeaway: practical AI guides, walkthroughs and prompts in one library, for $29 once.
Scenes, in order:
1. "Clear your AI backlog."
2. What's inside: guides, step-by-step walkthroughs, adaptable prompts and templates. Recreate the library pages from the screenshots.
3. "$29 once. No subscription."
4. Final screen: "Explore the AI Library at smarterwithai.news/upgrade." Hold for 2 seconds.
Use our logo, the Inter font and only these colors: blue #2F4FC4, pale blue #EEF1FF, ink #292929.
Use only the text in this prompt and the images. No made-up numbers, reviews or features. And here’s what it produced:
Step 3: Fix What’s Off
No first draft is perfect. Ours had a big white card that sat empty for a beat, as if the video had frozen.
You don’t need to rebuild anything. Pick the fix that suits the change:
Leave a comment: pause on the moment, click the element and say what’s wrong.

Edit one section: select a section on the timeline and ask for a change. The rest stays put.
Open Tweaks: change a scene’s length or speed, or retype any word on screen yourself. No prompt needed.
Switch to Style: [CONFIRM: one line on what Style changes, e.g. colors or fonts]

Just ask: describe the change in the chat.
Step 4: Export It
Happy with it? Click Export and choose MP4. That’s your video.
Not ready to download? Click Share instead. Videos start private, so you choose who sees them.
Want to keep polishing? Open the file in Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI or Runway. Canva and Captions are coming soon.
Pro tips:
Storyboard first: get the plan in text before anything moves.
Fewer words, more seconds: one idea per scene.
Rushed? Try 15 or 20 seconds instead of 10.
Brand file: put your colors, logo and screenshots in one PDF and attach it.
Going vertical? Ask for 1080 × 1920, and Claude rearranges the layout instead of cropping it.
04 / DASHBOARDS
Turn Your Data Into a Live Dashboard
Motion has a sibling. Claude Dashboards turns your data into a live dashboard, with no SQL needed.
Step 1: Bring Your Data
Two options:
→ Connect a data tool: BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift or ClickHouse, or an app you’ve already connected, like Salesforce.
→ Attach a file: no data warehouse? Export a CSV and drop it into the chat. Claude works from a snapshot, so it won’t update on its own.
Step 2: Ask a Question, Not for a Chart
Most people get this wrong. Anthropic’s advice is to say what you want to know.
Not: “A signups chart.”
Try: “How do this month’s signups compare with last month’s?”
Copy this:
Make a dashboard from [this file / my data source].
I need to decide [your decision].
Put the 3 numbers that matter most at the top, each compared with last [week / month].
Break them down by [channel / product / region].
Add a filter for [date / region].
List every assumption you made, and ask me questions first if you need to.Step 3: Click Any Number
Every chart shows the query behind it and when its data was last refreshed. Click a number and you see exactly what Claude counted, like a formula in a spreadsheet.
Step 4: Change It by Asking
“Add a filter for region.”
“Switch to a weekly view.”
“Add a table I can sort.”
Step 5: Share It
Dashboards start private. Click Share when you’re ready.
Bonus, on Team plans: comment on any chart and ask Claude to turn it into a Motion video. That’s how dashboard and animation work together.
