ChatGPT can now hide a private conversation behind a PIN, so it stays out of your chat history when someone else uses your phone or laptop. You can still open it whenever you need it.

Open ChatGPT on the web or in the app and sign in. Then open the conversation you want to keep private.

Click the ••• menu for the chat and select Lock chat. Confirm with Lock chat again, then create your 4-digit PIN. The chat disappears from your regular history and search right away.

Go to Projects → Locked chats and enter your PIN to see your locked conversations. On mobile, you can skip the PIN:

To move a chat back to your regular history, open it from Locked chats, select ••• → Unlock chat, then confirm.

Use Locked chats for anything you would rather keep to yourself, like gift ideas, health questions, money planning, or a job search you have not told anyone about. One PIN covers all of them, and what you share there does not carry over into your regular Memory.

Note: Locking hides a chat, but it does not encrypt it. If you reset a forgotten PIN, all your locked chats are permanently deleted, and OpenAI support can’t recover them. Locked chats are available on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. They’re still rolling out, so if you don’t see Lock chat yet, it hasn’t reached your account.
